Stand Up for Your Seafood: Join the Fight for Australian Choice

Updated: Jul 16

Australians take pride in our seafood — and rightly so. Our waters yield some of the cleanest and most sustainably caught seafood globally. However, there’s a troubling trend behind the scenes. Gradually, our access to local seafood is being diminished. This is not due to a lack of fish or unsustainable practices. The issue lies in decisions being made without input from the one voice that matters most — yours.

🎣 Closure by Closure, Choice Is Being Erased

You’ve probably seen the headlines:

“Net-free zone announced in popular coastal area.”
“New marine park declared to ‘protect’ local species.”
“Commercial access reduced to preserve fish stocks.”

At first glance, these initiatives seem reasonable. However, the reality is far different. Commercial fishers have faced cutbacks for decades. They have been tracked, capped, audited, restricted, and regulated. Still, closures continue to multiply. The fundamental problem? Consumers have never had a seat at the table. That is changing now.

👥 We’re Here to Change That

Seafood Society Australia is the first-ever grassroots organisation formed to represent Australian seafood consumers. Environmental lobby groups and recreational fishing advocates have long had significant political influence. In contrast, the Australian consumer—the person who buys, cooks, and eats local seafood—has been left out.

This organisation was created to ensure that consumers are included in every decision affecting our oceans. Born from the struggles of commercial fishers who could no longer fight alone, we believe that consumers are the missing piece in this equation.

For the first time, seafood lovers nationwide have a collective voice. This voice speaks for fair access, local supply, and transparency in fisheries management. Seafood Society Australia exists to give you a seat at the table.

🗣 Our Mission Is Simple

Our mission is to defend your right to access fresh, local, wild-caught Australian seafood. We advocate for seafood that is not frozen, imported, or farmed overseas, but rather sourced from our own waters by hardworking Australians.

We are building a movement that:

  • Fights unnecessary closures

  • Challenges imported alternatives that replace local fish

  • Demands transparency in fisheries policy

  • Gives consumers a voice in every state and territory

When your choice is taken away, you are left with whatever is available—and that is simply not adequate.

🛑 It's Time to Push Back

Let’s clarify something: our commercial fishers are not the villains in this narrative. They are among the most monitored, regulated, and sustainable operators worldwide. Sadly, they have become scapegoats in a political playground.

The real losers? You. Each closure results in less local seafood on the market. What takes its place? Often, it is imported seafood from countries with subpar standards, coupled with concerning environmental and labor practices.

This issue transcends mere fish. It touches on food security, fairness, and your right to choose what you want on your plate.

✅ Join the Movement

We need your voice. Become a member for just $10 a year. Here are some steps to take:

  • Support local seafood by talking to your retailers about sourcing options.

  • Share the truth with your friends and family. Let them know what is truly happening.

This isn't someone else's struggle. If you enjoy seafood, then it’s your struggle too.

🌊 The Ocean Is for All of Us

Seafood Society Australia stands firmly for consumers. Our goal is not to sell anything but to ensure that the seafood on your table is local, sustainable, and caught by the hands of real Australians. We aim to prevent it from being lost to policies made behind closed doors.

Your seafood. Your choice. Your voice.

Why This Matters

Understanding the implications of seafood access is crucial. Our oceans are a shared resource. Decisions regarding their use should not exclude any stakeholder. This includes consumers, who are often the last to be considered in policy-making.

The Ripple Effect

The effects of reduced access to local seafood reach far beyond personal choice. They impact local economies, fishers’ livelihoods, community health, and even the environment.

By uniting as consumers, we can influence policy to prioritize sustainable practices and local access. The more voices we have, the stronger our message becomes.

The Future of Australian Seafood

Together, we can shape a future where local seafood is not just a choice but the norm. It takes advocacy, collaboration, and collective action. Seafood Society Australia is leading the charge, but we need you to be part of it.

Let’s ensure that future generations enjoy the bounty of our oceans. Join us in making a difference today.
